"Woven Air" by Fico: A Poetic Fusion of Craft and Lightness at Milan Design Week 2025
At Milan Design Week, the "Woven Air" collection, complementing the "Barbara" and "Ondine" pieces by Fico (a Bangladeshi design brand), introduced a poetic series that seamlessly merges - among other furniture pieces - structured geometric wooden panels with the delicate transparency of handwoven Jamdani textiles. This debut furniture collection, overseen by Fico founder Rayana Hossain, showcased sculptural statement pieces that blend contemporary influences with traditional craftsmanship.
This ethereal fusion pays homage to one of the world's most intricate weaving traditions – Jamdani. Celebrated for its enduring craftsmanship, Jamdani reflects centuries-old techniques passed down through generations of artisans in Bangladesh. Each Jamdani screen within "Woven Air" not only underscores the fragility of this heritage in a modern world but also serves as a beautiful tribute.
A particularly poignant detail is the use of "Phuti Karpas" cotton. Once crafted from this now-rare variety, these textiles represent a lost era of luxury. Reinterpreted within "Woven Air," they become both a tribute to this precious material and a call to action for environmental preservation.
This commitment to traditional artisanal methods, combined with a focus on quality materials, brings a sense of richness and refinement to the products.
Presented as part of the "Play" exhibition within MOSCAPARTNERS' Variations at Palazzo Litta, "Woven Air" offered more than just furniture; it presented a dynamic, sensorial experience. The exhibition was a study in contrasts – between the static and the dynamic, the grounded and the floating. Within the immersive spatial composition of the exhibition, materiality became motion, and furniture began to redefine the boundaries between function, form, and perception. It exemplified Fico's dedication to supporting artisanal traditions by placing these delicate textiles in a surprising new context.
From the captivating blend of heritage crafts and contemporary design that defines "Woven Air," we now embark on an exploration that delves into bespoke creations and sophisticated materiality. You won't want to miss what Studio Sarmite and Paulina Vasiliauskaitė have crafted, so keep reading!
